Week 4: Sketch-A-Day/ Painting A Week Challenge
Well, this is the final week of my sketch-a-day/ painting a week challenge. This week I decided to do a week of sketches. The main pic above is a sketch of my grandmother when she was younger. All of the sketches were done with regular pencils instead of drawing pencils. But, I do plan to go back with darker pencils in some areas before I spray a fixative.
This one is a sketch of my mother when she was younger…
I started playing around with cultural themes and iconography in this and the following sketch. This sketch contains the Ankh icon, known as the Egyptian key of life.
This sketch uses Taino iconography of the Cemi, Coqui and Caracol. The Cemi is a stone comprised of three points that symbolizes the unity of the land of the Creator, the land of the dead and the land of the living. The Coqui is a tree frog native to the island of Boriken, the traditional name of Puerto Rico. The Caracol is a representation of the snail.
This final sketch is not yet complete as I ventured into exploring sketching with a pen this week. I started it in honor of Celia Cruz for her birthday yesterday. Here is a song for Celia. Hope you enjoy it!
